Scenius

Scenius

Group of seven young people standing and smiling on a dark stage, some wearing glasses, with a wooden floor, in casual clothing.

Level / Experience: Advanced

Discover new ways of playing by tapping into the wisdom of the room. We’ll boil improvisation down to the basics, listening and reacting, and explore how they can help us come up with ideas collectively. We’ll work with longer scenes and performance pieces so you explore how collective creativity works.

Scenius is designed for players who have taken Make a Scene or have equivilent, intermediate improv experience.

Discover new ways of playing by tapping into the wisdom of the scene. Brian Eno, producer and musician, coined the term “Scenius” to refer to the genius that emerges from collectives rather than individuals: the genius of the scene. In this course, you’ll explore how the concept of listening and reacting can be extended beyond the two-person scene to longer, group-based performance pieces. Scenius is all about paying attention to what is unfolding in the scene, allowing us to approach scenes from a place of discovery rather than invention.

Our advanced courses are designed for students with a solid grasp of the fundamentals — completion of both Rediscover Play and Make a Scene (or equivalent) is strongly recommended. Our advanced courses can generally be taken in any order; we encourage students to learn with different teachers to find which styles and techniques work best for them.

When: Begins Thursday the 6th of August until the 24th of September (eight weeks), followed by a performance Jam session on Friday 2nd of October.
Time: 6:00 - 8:00pm (two hours)
Where: Centenary Park Lesser Hall (105 Daly St, Belmont)

Skills you’ll build…without even noticing

Through games, laughter, and a little organised chaos from improvised theatre, this course gives you practical experience in:

  • Learning how to read the room so you can make more intuitive, in-the-moment choices.

  • Practising “deep tissue listening” that goes beyond words to what’s really being said (and felt).

  • Building greater trust, confidence, and mindfulness in how you show up with others.
