Scenius
Scenius
Level / Experience: Advanced
Discover new ways of playing by tapping into the wisdom of the room. We’ll boil improvisation down to the basics, listening and reacting, and explore how they can help us come up with ideas collectively. We’ll work with longer scenes and performance pieces so you explore how collective creativity works. Scenius is designed for players who have taken Make a Scene.
Term 3 Beginning Thursday 6th August!
When: 6 August to 24 September 2026 (8 weeks)
Time: 6:00 - 8:00pm (two hours)
Where: Centenary Park Community Centre Lesser Hall, 105 Daly St, Belmont WA
Teacher: Wyatt Nixon-Lloyd
Discover new ways of playing by tapping into the wisdom of the scene. Brian Eno, producer and musician, coined the term “Scenius” to refer to the genius that emerges from collectives rather than individuals: the genius of the scene. In this course, you’ll explore how the concept of listening and reacting can be extended beyond the two-person scene to longer, group-based performance pieces. Scenius is all about paying attention to what is unfolding in the scene, allowing us to approach scenes from a place of discovery rather than invention.
Our advanced courses are designed for students with a solid grasp of the fundamentals — completion of both Rediscover Play and Make a Scene (or equivalent) is strongly recommended. Our advanced courses can generally be taken in any order; we encourage students to learn with different teachers to find which styles and techniques work best for them.
When: Begins Thursday the 6th of August until the 24th of September (eight weeks), culminating with an optional Student Showcase performance.
Time: 6:00 - 8:00pm (two hours)
Where: Centenary Park Lesser Hall (105 Daly St, Belmont)

Skills you’ll build…without even noticing
Through games, laughter, and a little organised chaos from improvised theatre, this course gives you practical experience in:
Learning how to read the room so you can make more intuitive, in-the-moment choices.
Practising “deep tissue listening” that goes beyond words to what’s really being said (and felt).
Building greater trust, confidence, and mindfulness in how you show up with others.

All courses are capped at 16 students to ensure enough individual attention. Our suite of advanced courses are individually developed by our expert facilitators, developed from their own extensive improv training and experience. Each advanced course offers a unique experience, focusing on particular skills, tools, and expertise to give you a wide range of opportunities to develop your improv skills. As usual, you are expected to adhere to our Conditions of Participation.
Advanced courses are intended for students with a solid grasp of the fundamentals from Rediscover Play and Make a Scene (or equivalent) looking to deepen their knowledge and skills. Someone who has undertaken several advanced courses will be equipped to tackle more advanced formats like ‘The Harold’, for example. Ultimately, we encourage students to find what works for them by continually learning and experimenting. -
Not necessarily; life happens and we understand making all classes can be difficult. However, a commitment to the course is important to make the most of it. We also expect you attend a minimum of six classes to perform in the Student Showcase, though we may make exceptions on a case-by-case basis.

You’re in the upper tiers now! Our advanced courses focus on particular skills and tools that enhance your improv fundamentals. Your teacher(s) will still be providing help and feedback throughout the term, but this is the level at which you also start to reflect on your own progress. Many of our students have completed at least some of our advanced courses more than once. Graduating is more about recommendation than advancement at this stage. Speak with your teacher in class about your progress and challenges.

However, due to our range of courses, you may only see the same advanced course once a year. If a course is sold out, you may email inquiries@onlythehuman.com and we’ll do our best to let you know if places become available.

Find the game, find the funny.
You’re onstage with your scene partner. You’ve started a scene. You found a funny thing. Now what? In Pattern & Game, we’ll see how characters, emotions, and repetition can create unique and interesting dynamics - and how we can explore and heighten those dynamics to create compelling, funny scenes. The core concept here is the Upright Citizens Brigade’s notion of a game - a repeated pattern of unusual (but grounded) behaviour within a scene. Pattern & Game also bridges intermediate-level formats like The Montage to advanced formats like The Harold. The term will culminate in a format that combines elements of both.
