Make A Scene
Make A Scene
Level / Experience: Intermediate
You’ve got a solid grasp on the basics. It’s time to let go of control, step into your stretch zone, and let delight lead the way. Put all your improv skills to work at once as you device skits, scripts and stories in real-time. We’ll move from games to scene so you can test your skills without scaffolds, with coaching and support to help you refine the craft. Make a Scene is designed for improvisers who have taken Rediscover Play.
Term 3 Beginning Tuesday 4th August!
When: 4 August to 22 September 2026 (8 weeks)
Time: 6:00 - 8:00pm (two hours)
Where: Royal Park Hall, 180 Charles St, West Perth
Teacher: Amy Fortnum
You’ve got a solid grasp on the basics. It’s time to let go of control, step into your stretch zone, and find the joy and delight that comes from working with others. Make a Scene is designed for those demonstrating the fundamentals of improvisation and more experienced players looking to reconnect with trust, vulnerability, and collaboration.
This course uses the two-person scene from improvised theatre to teach you how to:
🫰 Find joy and excitement by focusing on the present moment.
🫰 Deeply listen to others to discover inspiration.
🫰 Create a two-person scene, the essential building block of improvised theatre.
Our courses are a cohort and term-based experience, so you’ll be part of a supportive and diverse group of people. Courses are offered over an eight week term, with weekly two-hour classes beginning at 6:00pm.
Skills you’ll build…without even noticing
Through games, laughter, and a little organised chaos from improvised theatre, this course gives you practical experience in:
Finding more joy and energy by focusing on what’s happening right now.
Getting out of your head and into the room, where the real connection happens.
Building adaptability, flexibility, and resilience along the way.
FAQs

We recognise that many students want to commit to improvisation as a long-term practice. At the end of the course, your facilitator may recommend that you repeat Make a Scene; this is not uncommon if you are completing the course for the first time. Mastery takes time, and the course varies each term with different facilitators, so we encourage repetition to strengthen fundamental skills and good habits before moving forward.
For long-term improvisers — those that are comfortable with the fundamentals of Rediscover Play and Make a Scene — our suite of advanced courses are offered term-to-term in rotation. Many of our advanced students have gone on to put on Fringe shows, deliver keynote speeches, or start their own improvisation business!

You’re being asked to be playful, support growth for yourself & your classmates, and respect boundaries. We also ask that you make people feel welcome, respected, and included. Improvisation is a practice founded on creative self-expression, discrimination or harassment will not be tolerated. More details on all of this is available in our Conditions of Participation.
We also expect you attend a minimum of six classes to perform in the showcase, though we may make exceptions on a case-by-case basis. -
We strive to create a welcoming, trusting, and safe environment where marginalised folks can find joyful, creative self-expression. Historically our courses have been particularly popular with neurodivergent people, those with social anxiety, or those who speak English as a second language.
Since our courses are delivered in a group coaching environment, we cannot provide one-on-one support. This means participants need to demonstrate a certain level of self-awareness and self-management. Anyone with a serious mental health condition, trauma, or complex inclusion needs is asked to consider whether this course is appropriate for them. Improvisation can support wellbeing, but it is not therapeutic intervention. Our facilitators are great teachers, but they are not healthcare professionals. If you’re unsure whether or not this course is for you, you’re very welcome to email us directly at inquiries@onlythehuman.com to discuss your needs.
