Expand your comfort zone

Mortgage. Office politics. The news. At some point, life got serious, and so did we. We lost our confidence, snuffed our spark and let our life turn into a to-do list of small anxieties.

Our workshops help you find your way back to play. Play reminds you that you aren’t your job or your worries. You’re a wild, feral human.

You’re the smartest animal on Earth.

Who we help

Helping adults reconnect with play

Only the Human helps slightly serious people rediscover their confidence and creativity while connecting with other people. Whether for professional or personal development, we believe play is essential for everyone. It’s how we adapt, thrive, and stay grounded in joy.

We were founded by a group of half-actor, half-professional monsters: People unwilling to trade childhood for adulthood. We saw what improv did for our ability to connect, communicate and collaborate, and we wanted to extend that to others as well.

Benefits

We help slightly serious people who want to show up to life more energetically, creatively and joyfully.

Confidence

Discover wild confidence grounded in who you already are. Develop the courage to express yourself spontaneously.

Presence

Performance today is about the ability to show up with presence. Manage your nerves, connect with others and be attentive to the room.

Connect

When we feel confident and trust ourselves, we can bring that loose joy to how we show up with others. Connect more deeply, within and without.

Play

We play to remember we are always playing. Let go, loosen up and meet new people. It’s all just fun and games.

Background Story

How Only The Human Started

Only The Human has evolved through many names and stages over the years, but its purpose has remained the same: using laughter, storytelling and improvisation to build meaningful human connection and strengthen community wellbeing. Based in Western Australia, the organisation teaches and performs improv while fostering an inclusive, thriving creative community. As a registered social enterprise and charity, Only The Human exists to bring people together through play, collaboration and shared experiences.

I absolutely loved my experience with Only The Human! From the free introductory class to the graduation performance, the course was thoughtfully designed to guide us through all the elements needed to put on a show. Many of us started with no acting or stage experience, but the supportive and fun environment created by the friendly teachers made all the difference.

Attending Only The Human has made such a positive impact on me! It’s a safe space to learn and play. My acting skills have Improved immensely and the process has been nothing but fun! It’s a place where we can let go of seriousness and it’s a place for everyone. Jay and Michael are amazing teachers that are always supportive and caring in their guidance during the Rediscover Play and Make A Scene classes. Such a warm community and excited to continue learning here!

Rediscover Play with Only The Human helped me to do just that - rediscover play. Michael and Amy created such a safe and encouraging environment to play in that I was able to step out of my head and just be in the moment. I can't tell you how amazing this is. If you are a perfectionist or an over thinker, I 100% recommend this course!!!

FAQs

  • At the start of a two-hour class, we normally begin with some simple, easy warm-up exercises before moving to improv exercises around a key theme like connection, listening, or spontaneity. We have a short debrief after each exercise and take a break halfway through class.

  • Our teachers come from all walks of life, but all have either degree-level training in the creative industries or have studied improvisation intensively in the United States. We work off a training and mentorship model, so new teachers (if they have not taught elsewhere) are supported for several terms before teaching independently. Learn more about our faculty here.

  • Some of the greatest transformations we see are with introverted people. Getting over the initial confidence bump can be more challenging, but we find that highly structured games and exercises often provide introverts with an opportunity to shine. Improvisation isn’t about being extraverted all the time — it also requires listening, patience, and careful pattern recognition.

We also cap our paid courses at 16 people. We find 12-16 people ideal for both creating connection and providing opportunities for breaks and smaller group work.

  • Lots of people come to improvisation after having attended a public speaking course. Improvisation is particularly helpful for those off the cuff situations where you need to speak fluently and confidently without a script. Think meetings, interviews, and presentations.

However, if you’re looking to develop a tightly refined story or pitch then improvisation is best considered a supplementary part of your toolkit. There are lots of places that do this training well, and our personal favourites are Barefaced Stories and the Centre for Stories.
