Scenius

Sale Price: A$450.00 Original Price: A$550.00

Discover new ways of playing by tapping into the wisdom of the scene. Brian Eno, producer and musician, coined the term “Scenius” to refer to genius that emerges from collectives rather than individuals: the genius of the scene. In this course, you’ll explore how the concept of listening and reacting can be extended beyond the two-person scene to longer, group-based performance pieces. Scenius is all about paying attention to what is unfolding in the scene, allowing us to approach scenes from a place of discovery rather than invention.

Our advanced courses are designed for students with a solid grasp of the fundamentals — completion of both Rediscover Play and Make a Scene (or equivalent) is strongly recommended. Our advanced courses can generally be taken in any order; we encourage students to learn with different teachers to find which styles and techniques work best for them.

When: Begins Thursday the 6th of August until the 24th of September (eight weeks), with an optional Student Showcase performance the following week.
Time: 6:00 - 8:00pm (two hours)
Where: Birak - First Summer @ Loftus Recreation Centre (99 Loftus St, Leederville)
Teacher: TBC

The Questions

What can I expect to learn through the advanced courses?

All courses are capped at 16 students to ensure enough individual attention. Our suite of advanced courses are individually developed by our expert facilitators, developed from their own extensive improv training and experience. Each advanced course offers a unique experience, focusing on particular skills, tools, and expertise to give you a wide range of opportunities to develop your improv skills. As usual, you are expected to adhere to our Conditions of Participation.
Advanced courses are intended for students with a solid grasp of the fundamentals from Rediscover Play and Make a Scene (or equivalent) looking to deepen their knowledge and skills. Someone who has undertaken several advanced courses will be equipped to tackle more advanced formats like ‘The Harold’, for example. Ultimately, we encourage students to find what works for them by continually learning and experimenting.

Do I need to come to every class?

Not necessarily; life happens and we understand making all classes can be difficult. However, a commitment to the course is important to make the most of it. We also expect you attend a minimum of six classes to perform in the Student Showcase, though we may make exceptions on a case-by-case basis.

What happens after the course finishes?

You’re in the upper tiers now! Our advanced courses focus on particular skills and tools that enhance your improv fundamentals. Your teacher(s) will still be providing help and feedback throughout the term, but this is the level at which you also start to reflect on your own progress. Many of our students have completed at least some of our advanced courses more than once. Graduating is more about recommendation than advancement at this stage. Speak with your teacher in class about your progress and challenges.

Will the same course be available in the future?

Yes. At least one of our suite of advanced courses are offered each term with consideration to variety and teacher availability. However, due to our range of courses, you may only see the same advanced course once a year. If a course is sold out, you may email inquiries@onlythehuman.com and we’ll do our best to let you know if places become available.

Do you offer any payment plans or scholarships?

All courses are offered at our ‘early bird’ rate up to approx. 72 hrs before the course begins — enrolment pricing will then revert to the full retail cost. Only The Human offers the option to pay in four interest-free installments using Klarna (see their Usage and Terms). Simply select Klarna from the payment methods at checkout and you’ll be directed through their payment process.
Each term we offer two partial scholarships for each course to students who face marginalisation, discrimination, or financial hardship. These scholarships discount the course cost by $150 and are offered on a no questions asked basis - the discount code for this course is “HELPSCENIUS” to be applied at checkout.

Can I enrol for someone else?

Absolutely! You can purchase courses as a gift, or just enrol a friend to join you. When you enrol, just say “It’s for someone else,” and add their details. If you want it to be a surprise, please let us know when you’ve completed the enrolment.
