Level 1: Intro to Improv
Jump in with our introductory classes!
About these classes:
The best place to start learning improvised comedy. Here, we’ll learn how to be spontaneous, trust and listen to one another, and perform confidently at the top of your intelligence. This is where we’ll learn how having fun and being radically excellent with one another can make funny happen.
This is a great course for anyone looking to jump in to improvised comedy. You don’t have to be a comedian! Improv is personal skills, professional skills, and funny skills all wrapped up in one. At the end of the term you’ll even have an opportunity to perform with your newly-formed troupe!
This term the classes will be taught by Jaleesa Maher, alumnus of Second City Toronto, and Jay Overington, alumnus of the iO Theatre Chicago. Both are improv pros, you’ll love em!
Only the Human places a high value on community, diversity and inclusion. We endeavour to create a safe space where people can explore comedy without fear of oppression or discrimination. Women, people of colour, non-binary, disabled and other folk are highly encouraged to take our classes.
Dates: Classes run every Wednesday for 8 weeks. We’ll start May 15th.
Times: Classes run for 2 hours, from 7:00 - 9:00pm.
Where: Subiaco Arts Centre, 180 Hamersley Rd, Subiaco WA.
Can I try Improv first?
Yes! The week before classes commence we’re offering a free tryout session at Earthwise Subiaco. To register, just drop an e-mail to email@example.com with “Improv Tryout,” as the header.
You can also check out our What’s On page for upcoming shows, which often provide a chance to do a drop-in performance - no prior experience required!
Why should I do Improv with OTH?
Improv is a uniquely social experience and a great opportunity to make new friends and push your boundaries. We learn in Level 1 that being a good improviser is often just about being a radically excellent human: We need to be able to be vulnerable, confident, supportive, and empathetic.
At Only the Human we take pride in making sure that all students feel welcome, accepted & included. When you join the company you’re also joining a community with plenty of opportunities for further learning, play and performance after you finish the course.
Don’t just listen to us though. Improv is effective in helping bosses become better leaders, improving mental health, and has even helped recently released prisoners adjust to life after release. Whoever you are, we are sure there’s something in Improv for you.
What can I expect to learn in Level 1?
The level 1 curriculum focuses on giving you the skills you need to be able to perform the two-person scene, the essential building block of all improvised comedy. We’ll look at how paying attention, trusting our scene partner and reacting in the moment can build scenes that are both believable and hilarious. The focus is on learning by doing, so you’ll be spending lots of time honing your funny instincts. Most of all, we’ll learn that improv skills are life skills. You’ll learn how to have fun, be confident, and trust your instincts.
Do I need to come to every class?
Life happens and we understand making all eight classes can be difficult. To be able to achieve the course’s key outcomes and move on to Level 2 (if desired), we recommend that you aim to make at least six out of eight classes.
